A new year means new Netflix acquisitions. Before Season 2 hits your laptop screen, binge watch Season 1. The BBC, Fox and Netflix created superb, geek-inspired shows yester-year. Watch these series before they pass into the nether reaches of 4th and 5th seasons, lost in time and space where only Whovian audiences exist.

Supernatural, teen dramas appear too lowbrow for Netflix, but Hemlock Grove steps up this subgenre’s game. P.O.V. shots and splintering fingernails spread true terror. An opening sex scene reveals Netflix has no intention of beating around the bush. If you like your supernatural thrillers with minimal tween gloss, watch Season 1 quick, because Season 2 follows hauntingly close.

When all electricity shuts off, minor, militaristic governments take over the world. Revolution jumps on the “Hunger Games” bandwagon with a female, bow-welding protagonist who knows oppression just isn’t right. The scenario and fight scenes sustain the show with a whirlwind of action and mystery. Prepare yourself for the epic quest by powering through the 1st Season in time for the 2nd.

There is something to be said for political thrillers, let Kevin Spacey lead. Even the direct monologues into camera feel comfortably uncomfortable with that sinister, exquisitely played character. House of Cards flows dark, slow and moody. It gives a behind-the-curtain look at the political machine and all the moving parts.  In a world of pawns and well-plotted moves, remember, the Queen holds all the power.

Speaking of Queen, the Emerald Archer serves vigilante justice in a very comic-book way, complete with gun-vs-bow action and villainous, psychotic agendas. All set against an angsty, teen drama of love and betrayal. Every move Ollie makes throws one or both of his lives into jeopardy. With the wider range of the DC universe working its way into series, you do not want to miss seeing your favorite characters visualized by the CW.
